Things I did too much of yesterday

  • Fly on planes
  • Eat crappy and unhealthy food
  • Wait on lines (e.g., what with having to claim and then recheck luggage in Heathrow I think I went through some sort of passport control 5 times yesterday)

Things I will be doing too much of today
  • E-mail catchup
  • Clothes management: Unpacking, laundry, repacking*
  • Approximately 1000 errands around town
  • Feeling tired due to jet lag combined with absence of Xanax, cleverly the only thing left behind in the hotel room yesterday morning

Things I will be doing a bit too much of tomorrow

  • Flying
  • Driving
  • Being pleasant and professional upon arrival at a moment when it will not be congruent with my internal state

*Ok, even in this shameful moment of sleep-deprived complaining, I should note that the clothes management is a bit more pleasant this time around in that what with my long bike rides to work and salads and yoga and running again, I am definitely making progress towards the size that I find a reasonable maintenance weight. So it's not like I'm loving laundry now that my clothes are fitting a bit better, but trying things on before packing them will definitely be a bit less unpleasant.

That trying things on before packing them is a good idea. I probably should have done that before going to my reunion. On the other hand, if, 12 hours before I got on a plane, I had realized that my just-pulled-from-storage, warm-weather clothes no longer fit, what would I have done about it, other than fret?

Yeah, I'm kind of an uptight packer. The thing is that when I'm travelling I'm either at a conference, in which case I want to look nice, or doing other work stuff, in which case I'm supposed to look nice, or hanging out with friends, many of whom are really very stylish. So I find that those times when I don't put in effort I'm kind of pissed at myself the whole time, but when I do put in effort I'm happy and proud of my ingenuity. Plus I don't want to check luggage anymore, so everything has to fit in my backpack. So it's worth the extra half an hour. Meanwhile, the obvious answer to your question, Ms. Erma, is to shop online at the airport and have things delivered to your hotel. Here I thought you were so internet-savvy...
